Foreign Language Opportunities

As one of six master's programs in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, the Security Studies Program (SSP) encourages students to learn a foreign language that complements their knowledge of security. SSP students are eligible to audit language classes for free and may apply for the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS).

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

The FLAS Program awards allocations of fellowships to institutions of higher education to assist students undergoing graduate training in modern foreign languages and related areas or international studies. FLAS allocations may be used for academic year and summer. The advanced level summer study allows graduate students to complete the equivalent of one academic year of their chosen language. FLAS fellowships may be awarded to graduate students who are US citizens or nationals or permanent residents and who are enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) in a program that combines modern foreign language training with international or area studies or with the international aspects of professional or other fields of study. FLAS fellowships provide graduate students with a full tuition scholarship and a monthly stipend for the study of languages including Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, Persian, Portuguese and Ukranian among others.

Auditing a Foreign Language Course

Students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences may enroll and audit Georgetown University language courses without charge during the normal academic year. To do so, students must:

Register for the language course through Student Access+;

Complete an Add/Drop form indicating a change from “for credit “to “audit” status for the language course;

Receive permission from the instructor of the language course to change from “for credit” to “audit”; and,

Submit the Add/Drop form to the Academic Counselor for Program approval.

Failure to complete and submit the Add/Drop form change from “for credit” to “audit” will result in the university charging the student full tuition for the course.

Note: Language departments and/or individual instructors will specify the standards for attendance and academic progress that graduate student auditors are expected to meet. If a professor notifies the Graduate School that a student has failed to meet the standards, the student will be withdrawn from the course and a “W” will be recorded on the student’s transcript.
