One-to-One Career Consultations

Individual career counseling is an integral component of SSP Career Services.  Prominent features of career counseling at the SSP include:

Job-Document Assistance

In order to be competitive in the security-related job market, it is essential that candidates possess a highly-polished resume as well as the ability to write outstanding cover letters.  The SSP Career Services Coordinator has an in-depth knowledge of the professional security community and works with students to build new and improve upon existing resumes and cover letters.  With a textured understanding of document aesthetics and the ability to spot grammatical pitfalls, the Career Services Coordinator helps students create top-notch job documents that serve as invaluable tools during the job search process.

Career & Internship Guidance

SSP students come from a wide spectrum of personal backgrounds and have highly individualized professional goals.  The Career Services Coordinator provides career and internship guidance that takes into consideration the experience level, vocational interests, and unique circumstances of each student.  A tremendously important aspect of the SSP student experience is the nexus between academic and professional development.  With this in mind, the Career Services Coordinator helps students identify opportunities that will facilitate the achievement of their professional goals while simultaneously allowing them to strike a healthy balance between academic and workplace obligations.

Mock Interviews

Mock interviews allow students to practice answering questions that are likely to be asked during real interviews, and to assess and improve verbal and non-verbal communication skills before a real interview takes place.  The Career Services Coordinator takes the role of the interviewer and makes the session as realistic as possible by asking questions that are typical of those that are asked based on the type of position being sought.  At the conclusion of mock interviews, the Career Services Coordinator provides valuable feedback that allows students to refine their interview skills.  Students have the option of having mock interviews videotaped in order to see themselves as others do, and also so that they can bring home a recording of the session for further analysis.

Professional Networking

SSP students and alumni are permanent members of a close-knit community whose members seek to help one another whenever possible.  Students who create a solid set of job documents often indicate a desire to broaden their understanding of various security related subfields and organizations.  Utilizing a database that keeps track of student and alumni employment, the Career Services Coordinator is able to network students with other members of the SSP community who are able to offer valuable guidance that can only be provided by individuals working inside a specific organization.
