Alumni Leadership Council

The Alumni Leadership Council (ALC) advances the academic and professional development of Security Studies Program (SSP) students by strengthening the bond between students and SSP Alumni. The ALC sponsors panel discussions, professional development workshops, and social networking events.  Each event is designed to share the professional experience and expertise of alumni with current students.

Mission
As the appointed representative body of the SSP alumni community, it is the ALC’s mission to help strengthen the connection among SSP alumni, students, and faculty, advance the professional and academic development of SSP students, and further the goals of the Center for Peace and Security Studies.

In order to achieve this three-part mission, the Council will:

  • Increase and enhance the pool of applicants to the Security Studies Program through active and organized recruiting initiatives.

  • Produce and support professional, scholarly, and social activities of interest to SSP alumni and students.

  • Improve and expand the services, activities, and events available to the SSP community.

  • Increase alumni involvement in CPASS activities and advancement.

  • Develop a network of SSP alumni dedicated to the professional development of SSP students through recruiting events, mentoring, networking, social events and professional alliances.

  • Increase public awareness of the Center for Peace and Security Studies and its increasing role in the dialogue on international security issues.

  • Recruit new members to the ALC and promote awareness of the Council’s mission among the greater SSP community.

  • Provide feedback to the CPASS administration on proposed academic and professional development programs.

  • Develop recognition opportunities for members of the SSP community.

Council Structure
The Council Chair leads the 25 member organization. The Council meets two times per semester to review the state of the program, coordinate events, and design professional development programs. Membership rotates according to interest and availability of alumni.

Other activities might include helping to staff college fairs and hosting receptions.   As CPASS Ambassadors, members will help to promote a positive image of the Security Studies program by initiating programs aimed at promoting positive publicity for the Center, both to prospective students and the greater security community as a whole.

Professional Development Committee

The Professional Development Committee will work closely with the SSP Alumni and Career Services Coordinator and the Committee Chair to improve upon existing alumni career services toward the development of a full-service career network available to all members of the SSP community. Committee members will promote strategic partnerships with organizations willing to provide SSP students with internships, fellowships and job opportunities; assist the Alumni and Career Services Coordinator in planning and implementing professional development events including alumni roundtable events, recruiting sessions, field trips and tours; recruiting members of the alumni community to serve as mentors.

Program Committee

The Program committee will advise and assist the designated CPASS liaison in planning, organizing and implementing services and events provided to members of the SSP community.  These include: networking and social events, lecture series’ and panel discussions.  The committee will also be charged with leveraging personal and professional affiliations in order to enhance the quality of CPASS programming.  This includes securing speakers, investigating corporate sponsorship opportunities, promoting CPASS programs both within and outside of the CPASS community, and advising CPASS staff on topics and speakers that will best serve the SSP community and promote positive publicity for CPASS.

Awards Committee

The Awards Committee will be charged with developing opportunities for the SSP community to recognize members for their professional and/or academic achievements, dedication to the advancement of SSP and CPASS, and lifetime dedication to the advancement of National and International Security issues.  The committee would also help create and support an annual awards ceremony.
